Rug placement, does it matter?
/Looking to buy a new rug to update your home? Unsure what size to get? Let’s break it down room by room.
The living room, the room you spend a lot time in and entertain your guests in. The rug should fit the size and scale of the room and the furniture placement.
If you have an open concept living space the rug defines the space. If the space allows all legs of the furniture should be fully placed on the rug while leaving at least 6 inches of rug visible on each side. This large scale rug will ground the space and clearly define the living room.
If the furniture placement involves the couch against a wall then the front legs of each furniture piece should rest on the rug. You don’t want the rug all the way up to the wall nor should it be floating in front of the furniture.
Moving on to the dining room. Having a rug in the dining room warms up the space along with adding color and texture. The size and shape of the rug depend on the size and shape of the dining table. A rectangle table use a rectangle rug. A round dining table can be placed on a rectangle or a round rug. One thing is universal for rugs in the dining room, all of the table legs should be on the rug. The rug should extended out at least 24 inches from the table legs to allow the chairs to remain on the rug when pushed back.
Lastly let’s talk about bedroom rugs. The bed is the focal point and determines the placement of a rug. A good rule of thumb is to have 2/3 of the rug covered by the bed. In a smaller room the nightstands may be placed fully on the rug but more commonly the rug will come up to just in front of the nightstand. If the room has the space for a bench or chairs at the end of the bed these should be placed fully on the rug. A general guide is if you have a queen bed you will need an 8 x 10 rug, and if you have a king bed then look for a 9 x 12.
